connecting rue de la Madeleine to rue Saint-Jean and originally part of a larger complex including the Madeleine Market.
55 rue de la Madeleine. Main entrance of the Bortier Gallery. Former mansion dating back to the late 17th century or early 18th century, purchased in 1763 by Beydaels, "king of arms" of the Duchy of Brabant, and later transformed. Later and until the second quarter of the 19th century, it became the starting point for coaches to Paris, the "Messageries J. B. Van Gend". It was then owned by P.LA. Bortier, promoter of the project to build the Madeleine Market and the gallery bearing his name, built in 1847-1848 according to the plans of the architect J.-P. Cluysenaar (see Bortier Gallery and rue Duquesnoy, n° 14). The house was then demolished, with the exception of the main facade, as well as the inner courtyard with arcades and the annexes extending to the former Saint-Jean Hospital.
